Essential Career and Networking Tips for Success in 2025

As we step into 2025, the ways in which we network and build careers are evolving faster than ever. The methods may change from in-person events to online connections via platforms like LinkedIn, but the core principles of networking and career development remain the same. While new networks emerge and old ones fade, the fundamentals of creating relationships and advancing your career stay constant. Shifting your networking mindset and embracing change are the keys to building a lasting network and changing your career trajectory in 2025.
Networking: The Little Things Matter
I had a great conversation recently with a gentleman who owns several Chevy dealerships. We hadn’t spoken in five years, but when he saw me at a recent networking event, he immediately remembered me. He thanked me and even invited me to play a round of golf. He recalled how I helped his neighborhood get their cable installed with just a few phone calls. That small gesture meant the world to him and his neighbors. Networking doesn't have to be grandiose; small, thoughtful actions can create lasting impressions. When it comes to networking, mindset is everything. If you're looking to make real connections, approach networking with the goal of helping another person. If you're new to the market or have recently ventured into entrepreneurship, don’t worry if you lack a large network. Start by connecting with others at networking events or through LinkedIn. The key is to listen actively, ask insightful questions, and see how you can help promote their business. Most event attendees are there to build their sales, so seek out those individuals and offer value first. Help them out, and in turn, they will help you.
The next step is to stay top of mind. This doesn’t mean bombarding people with sales pitches, but rather building a relationship over time. Consistent, genuine contact without trying to sell anything is the best way to stay in someone’s memory. It’s not about making an immediate sale but about building trust. This strategy works better than you might think, and in time, people will remember you for the value you provided. If you're networking online, focus on identifying people you can help. Offer your assistance based on your skill set, and you might land a job or gain access to valuable future opportunities. Networking is like a web: One connection can lead to many more, and as you expand your network, the opportunities become limitless.
Career Growth: Are You Ready to Attend Your Own Funeral?
One of the best things about leaving a company is that it provides you with the chance to hear things you wouldn’t have otherwise. It’s like getting a sneak peek into your funeral, where people share insights they might not have voiced. I’ve heard from former colleagues about how much it meant when I took the time to ask how they were doing, even when they said they were "fine." By simply pulling them aside and offering my help, I was able to make a positive impact on their lives. These are the moments that truly matter.
In business change equals learning. Staying stagnant in your career can be one of the biggest obstacles to your success. If you remain in the same job, at the same company, or even in the same location for too long, you're limiting your potential for growth and financial success. Companies will pay you more when you leave, or come from the outside. When you don’t grow in your role or responsibilities, you’re likely stuck doing the same repetitive tasks, which can lead to burnout and a lack of motivation. Volunteer for added duties to provide value to your company, stretch yourself, and put yourself in a position to move up. If you are not moving up in the company, it’s time to move out.
To avoid career stagnation, embrace new experiences. Whether that means taking on new responsibilities, traveling, or exploring new cultures, broadening your horizons will help you grow both personally and professionally. I’ve never regretted any money I spent on travel. The challenges, the uncertainty, and the new perspectives you gain while navigating unfamiliar places are priceless. One of the best meals I ever had was in France with my wife, Paula, at a small restaurant where the waiter spoke little English. We thought we had ordered a couple of glasses of wine, an appetizer, and a couple of entrees. We ended up with a carafe of wine and several shared appetizers. The food was amazing, even though it wasn’t what we expected. That day was one I’ll always cherish, and it reminded me that stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to some of the best life experiences—and career growth.
